The best ideas for an unforgettable visit to Vienna in winter

The Christmas markets have been taken down, it's gray and on some days there's an icy wind. At first glance, the beginning of the year doesn't exactly present itself as the best time to visit Vienna. With our ideas, you'll learn why the city has a special charm in January and February.

Discover Vienna, a world capital of music

Vienna's cultural institutions offer a particularly enticing program in winter. The State Opera is considered one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, and the Musikverein offers unparalleled acoustics in the Great Golden Hall. But Vienna's churches, such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, St. Charles Church and St. Peter's Church, also regularly host classical concerts.

Do you prefer something more lively? The Viennese ball season begins in January with the motto “Alles Walzer” (it's time to waltz). You can choose from over 450 balls in different price categories and breathtaking locations such as the Hofburg palace, City Hall or Musikverein. Which one will you attend? The Bonbonball, the Philharmonikerball or the Blumenball? Traditionally, the balls end late at night at a sausage stand or with a goulash in a coffee house.

In 2025, Vienna will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss II with a colorful and extensive program. New this year: an Art & Tech exhibition that allows visitors to experience Strauss, his works and his life in an immersive and interactive way.

Heart-warming art in the museum

Vienna offers an impressive variety of museums that will delight both art and history lovers. Admire Caravaggio's “Madonna of the Rosary” or Bruegel's “Tower of Babel” in the Museum of Art History, as well as works by Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer.

The Museum Belvedere, with Klimt's iconic painting “The Kiss” all in gold – here, too, you can enjoy the fact that the exhibition rooms are emptier at the beginning of the year than in the tourist high season. The Albertina, on the other hand, impresses with a collection ranging from Monet to Picasso, as well as exciting temporary exhibitions. Those interested in the city's history will find plenty to keep them occupied at the new Vienna Museum. In addition to unique objects and city models, the sustainably designed museum building also scores points, including a roof terrace with a panoramic view of Karlsplatz!

Romance in the fresh air

Well dressed, Vienna can also be enjoyed in the fresh air. Parks such as the Prater or the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens are particularly romantic when it has snowed. Without crowds and only accompanied by the creaking of the snow underfoot, Vienna enchants you with its natural charm. Of course, the romance can be enhanced with a carriage ride in Vienna's typical fiacres! They also offer rides in winter, including cozy blankets around the legs.

Alternatively, you can beat the cold by skating on the “Ice Dream” in front of City Hall Square. A record-breaking 10,000 m2 of ice await you here, along with a curling rink, a viewing platform and romantic paths in the Rathauspark.

Whether you prefer a leisurely or sporty activity, a warm-up in a coffee house is definitely called for afterwards!

Unique experiences with a private guide

Do you want to discover Vienna's highlights, learn more about impressive works of art or experience the history behind the city's facades in a relaxed way? With a private guide, your Vienna program will be a special experience even in winter. The best part: you set the time and pace and can relax among yourselves.
