To see and be seen - that was the motto during the Ringstrasse era for the famous Corso, the stretch between Schwarzenbergplatz and the State Opera House. But what did women wear back then, and how often did they change outfits during the day? Today, the State Opera House hosts the Opera Ball, yet the motto seems to remain unchanged. But beware: there are also colors at the ball that women are absolutely forbidden to wear!

So where could one find fine fabrics for new dresses? Just behind the State Opera House, we’ll find out. Of course, the right jewelry is a must - for over 200 years, the Neuer Markt has been a top destination. Empress Elisabeth even purchased her famous diamond stars here!
Speaking of Sisi - was the empress actually a fashion icon? How did she dress, and who was responsible for her wardrobe at court? She certainly had rivals, as we’ll surprisingly discover at Ballhausplatz.

We’ll continue on to Kohlmarkt. This area remains exclusive to this day, so it’s no wonder that we’ll encounter one of Vienna’s most famous fashion designers here - as well as a successful cosmetics pioneer.
Finally, our path takes us to the place where textiles have been handled since the Middle Ages. On Graben, however, we’ll explore the style of a specific professional group - and yes, here, too, you have to be careful with your choice of colors!
