DELICIOUS VIENNA
OF PLAGUED BAKERS, IMPERIAL GLUTTONY AND SWEET SEDUCTION - A TOUR ON THE TRAIL OF CUISINE AND INDULGENCE IN VIENNA
We start our tour at Sweden Square, from where we head straight into the maze of alleyways in the old town and discover the history of Viennese cuisine at the famous Griechenbeisl restaurant. What would a pastry be without sugar? We look at where it once came from at the Lugeck and where it goes at St. Stephen's Cathedral with a Viennese favorite snack. Continuing on, we hear about the difficult life of bakers in the Middle Ages and discover the oldest still existing coffee house in Vienna. Did Mozart and Beethoven really play music here? At Neuer Markt Square, we talk about Empress Maria Theresa's greatest sin: gluttony! Who can blame her in Vienna?
Then one culinary institution follows the next, Trześniewski, Cafe Hawelka and of course Demel! On the way we learn more about the beginning of the seductive ice cream in Vienna, even the dieting Empress Sisi couldn't say no here! This brings us to the imperial Hofburg Palace. What was the emperor's favorite dish and what was it actually like to dine with the Habsburgs? Finally, we head to Albertina Square, where the Zuckerlwerkstatt is trying to revive the old tradition of candy production. Just around the corner: the famous Hotel Sacher. We end the tour there with Habsburg scandals and the question: what actually makes the Sacher Cake the original Sacher Cake?
