COFFEE HOUSE TOUR
COFFEE SPIES, COFFEE IN THREE-FOUR TIME AND THE BATTLE FOR WHIPPED CREAM - AN ENTERTAINING TOUR OF COFFEE HOUSE HISTORY IN VIENNA
We start in a very cozy and hidden spot at Cafe Diglas on Fleischmarkt, perhaps best with a hot melange and a juicy apple strudel? Surprisingly, even this small café is steeped in coffee house tradition. Things get really historical around the corner. We encounter the exotic coffee trade and innovative coffee merchants. And who would have thought that we could also find Vienna's very first coffee house here? We continue with adventurous coffee legends and disreputable locations and then things turn bright pink! But even the Aida coffee house chain is now firmly part of the Viennese coffee house tradition. Want something more serious? Then head to Cafe Frauenhuber, where Mozart and Beethoven have already made music.
How splendid can a coffee house be? In the direction of Graben and Kohlmarkt avenue, there were once extremely exclusive establishments, made entirely of silver or with endless mirrors. And who was the only lady in this coffee house? Speaking of which, we then meet Anna Demel, a grande dame of confectioners, before finally immersing ourselves in the world of literature in Herrengasse. At Cafe Central, we are greeted by magnificent architecture and, of course, Peter Altenberg - because as his contemporaries knew: if he's not at Cafe Central, he's on his way there!
