BIZARRE HABSBURGS
NEUROSES, AIRS AND GRACES AND A TERRIBLY NICE FAMILY - A TOUR OF THE MOST BIZARRE HABSBURGS
They simply belong in every family, the eccentrics, black sheep and bizarre characters! How could it be otherwise with a ruling family that ruled their empire from Vienna for 600 years? We start with the world-famous Empress Elisabeth and quickly realize that Sisi was also the empress of neuroses, especially in her later years! As go the rulers, so go the closest advisors. Chancellor Kaunitz once resided in the Federal Chancellery, a hypochondriac before the Lord! At the Hofburg Palace, we smile at the creativity with which the servants countered Franz Joseph's austerity measures.
By contrast, the famous Archduke Otto - known as the handsome Otto - was scandalous. The prudish Maria-Theresia would have been ashamed of herself when she saw him in the Hotel Sacher. Could it get any more bizarre? At St. Stephen's Cathedral we encounter an uninhibited forger and at the Plague Column a bigoted musician. Maria-Theresia ruled - so her husband Franz Stephan had to find other occupations for himself, some of which were extremely expensive, as we will see. We end at the Schottentor with an insight into the jealous relationship between Franz-Joseph and his adventurous brother Maximilian. Typical family!
